On the 23rd of December, the Ijesa Youths, represented by the Omo Owa Omo Ekun, convened a press conference at the historic Owa Obokun Adimula’s Palace located in Ilesa. Chief Comrade Babatunde Aguntasolo, who serves as the President of the Association, addressed a gathering of journalists and community members, providing critical updates concerning the current status of the Owa Obokun throne.
In his opening remarks, Comrade Aguntasolo emphasized that the revered throne of Ijesaland became vacant on September 12, 2024, following the passing of His Imperial Majesty, Oba (Dr.) Gabriel Adekunle Aromolaran II CFR LLD, the Owa Obokun Adimula, and paramount ruler of Ijesaland. The late monarch’s impressive 42-year reign was marked by significant contributions that redefined the Ijesa Obokun Kingdom, navigating through various political eras, including both military and democratic governance in Nigeria.
The President paid tribute to the late monarch’s legacy, describing him as a distinguished scholar and a dedicated advocate for peace, unity, and progress within Ijesaland. “Oba Aromolaran was a father figure to many, whose wise counsel and nurturing approach were hallmarks of his leadership. His absence will be profoundly felt by the youth and the entire community, as he symbolized harmony and inclusivity, even accommodating individuals from non-Yoruba backgrounds for the advancement of his kingdom.”
Aguntasolo remarked on the urgency of addressing the vacancy of the throne, asserting that a prolonged absence could destabilize the socio-cultural landscape of Ijesaland. He specifically highlighted the ruling house of Bilaro Olu-Odo as a potential group capable of providing a worthy successor. “We believe that this ruling house is endowed with individuals who possess the necessary leadership qualities and vision to elevate Ijesaland and fulfill the aspirations of its people.”
Simultaneously, the association made a concerted effort to address and dispel rampant rumors circulating within social media channels and local communities, which suggested that Omo Owa Omo Ekun had a designated candidate for the Owa throne. “It is imperative to clarify that Omo Owa Omo Ekun is entirely nonpartisan in this matter and does not endorse any individual who presents themselves as the next Owa Obokun outside of the established and respected traditional selection process guided by the Ifa Oracle,” they firmly stated.
The association reiterated its commitment to fostering peace and stability throughout Ijesaland. They underscored the importance of adhering to traditional cultural practices in the selection of the next Owa Obokun; such adherence is vital to ensuring that the collective interests of the youth, both within the Ijesa region and in the diaspora, are adequately represented in this pivotal decision-making process.
Furthermore, the Ijesa Youths called upon the Ijesa Kingmakers, who are recognized as custodians of Ijesa culture, to faithfully uphold the rich traditions associated with selecting the new occupant of the Owa Obokun Adimula’s Palace. “The decisions made by the Kingmakers will have far-reaching implications for the future of our community. It is crucial to acknowledge the sacrifices made by those who came before us and to honor their legacies in a manner that safeguards our cultural integrity,” they asserted.
Comrade Aguntasolo further stressed the critical need for impartiality within the selection process. He asserted that it would be inappropriate for the Kingmakers to exhibit favoritism or support specific candidates. “It is essential that they treat all interested princes equitably, ensuring that financial status or other influences do not skew the process,” he emphasized.
Additionally, he addressed the potential implications of state government involvement in the selection procedure, urging the Executive Governor of Osun State, Senator Jackson Nurudeen Ademola Adeleke, to refrain from any form of political interference. “It is vital to dismiss any rumors suggesting that the state government has a designated candidate for the people of Ijesa. Such actions would run counter to the established traditions and values of our community, which have long been grounded in the guidance of the Ifa Oracle,” he asserted.
The youths expressed their confidence in Governor Adeleke’s commitment to upholding traditional practices, believing he would encourage the Ijesa Kingmakers to let the Ifa Oracle guide their decision-making process in selecting the next Owa Obokun.
The association concluded its statements by appealing to all political stakeholders in Osun State, especially those of Ijesa descent, to respect and uphold the cultural heritage and integrity of the selection process. Such respect is integral to ensuring that the legacy of leadership within Ijesaland remains robust and reflective of the community’s values and aspirations.
